How to Make a Corn Husk Doll

Last week was Corn Week, so we made corn husk dolls.  It was especially interesting as we had just read about some of the indigenous people who were playing with them in one of our history books, Sign of the Beaver.

First we tied about seven pieces of yarn in the middle of two corn husks.  Next, we bent the husks at the middle and tied another piece of  yarn about an inch down to make a neck.  We used a marker to draw a face as well.

Then we used two smaller pieces of husks for the arms.  We attached them using another piece of yarn in an "X" pattern.  Tying two more pieces of yarn near the ends of arms made hands.

Last, the ladies braided their dolls' hair and made simple dresses by cutting a hole in the middle of a strip of fabric to fit over the head, and the guys used pieces of denim to make pants.  Mission accomplished.
