Jeff's Favorite Egg Carton Art

I had seen quite a few versions of these little guys and really wanted to try to make them.  I initially thought that they would probably be too difficult for my students to make, but decided to make one or two myself just for fun.  After making two, I decided to make four.  Then I decided that they weren't that hard to make after all, and that my students could easily make them.  And so they did.  Instructions below.

We took about a week to make these, completing one or two steps a day and then painting the next layer the next day after the paint from the day before had dried.

1.  Using a pattern, cut out ovals out of regular cardboard and then painted a background.
2.  Paint a frame around the edge.
3.  Add dots or lines to the frame if desired.
4.  Cut egg cartons into individual sections, leaving lots of extra on side for the ears.  The recycled textured kind work the best.
5.  Cut ears as desired for a bear or pig.  For rabbit or mice ears, cut another piece from the lid of the carton and cut the ears out of that.
6.  Paint the entire face and ears.  Let dry.
7.  Add details to the face; nose, eyes, ears, etc.  Let dry.
8.  Position the face onto the frame and sketch the jacket or shirt and arms.
9.  Paint the background of the clothes.  Let dry.
10.  Add details -  a darker shade for the arm lines, buttons, collar, etc.
11.  Glue the head onto the frame.
12.  Display!
