Apple Swans and Airplanes: More Demonstration Speeches

When I approved this one, I honestly had no idea how it could be done, but it can be done, and it was fascinating to watch.  Yay for great home economics teachers!   

One of the seniors is a pilot, and as we watched the landing on the screen, he described what was going on and how a plane is landed.  When I asked how the guy flew the plane without his hands on the yoke, the student replied, "Because this is just a flight simulator."  For the past five minutes, I had honestly thought I was watching a real video of a guy landing a plane.  

And if one grew up in Liberia where one cannot just run down to the nearest store and grab a gallon of ice cream, one learns to make it by mixing the ingredients in a zip lock bag and then rolling it around inside a bag of ice.  It works!   

And, to explain the decorations in the pilot demonstration speech video, we were celebrating Cinco de Mayo.

Guys Drive Big Machines; Guys Make Dogs Smell Clean

Demonstration Speeches, Part II 

Guys can operate big machines, 

Guys can replace cell phone screens,

Tires and car stuff they can fix,

Using tools, locks they can pick, 

Guys can make dogs smell all clean,

Guys can make yummy ice cream!  

English bull dogs get stressed out,

When from a bath they are pulled out, 

But they think that life's a dream,

When the girls give them ice cream.

Senior Demonstration Speeches - Food Day!

 Day one of the seniors' demonstration speeches was fabulous.  They did a great job and we all got to sample some delicious foods.  These included a pancake charcuterie board (complete with lots of bacon), shrimp tacos, healthy smoothies, homemade waffle bowls, fruit parfaits, and cake pops.  Yummy! 

I was wearing a little bit of taco sauce by the end of the class period.  

Get Under Your Desk Now!

When I challenged my senior speech students to begin their speeches with an intriguing attention-getter, I wasn't quite expecting this.  His speech began with a loud air raid siren and then he ordered us to get under our desks.  The Cold War Era immediately came to our classroom, and although it was exciting to jump under our desks (before I went to grab my camera), it was also a little scary.  And it was a great attention-getter.  Grade:  A+

 

Balloon Vocal Chord Day

 This week, the senior speech class has been studying how sound is produced in the vocal chords.  Our book compared the vocal chords to an air-filled balloon which has the neck stretched; the air passing through the neck of the balloon vibrates and produces the funny sound, similar to how sound is produced in our vocal chords.  So, I gave each student a balloon, and we made a lot of loud, strange, funny vocal-chord balloon air vibration noises.  This was a very practical lesson.  

Senior Speech Summons Shekels for Yemen

Recently, the senior speech class split into groups and gave presentations to the entire student body during morning chapels.  We were challenged on topics such as respect, thankfulness, and how we are using our time.  One group interviewed students and gathered information on the topic of giving.  Then they gave us all an opportunity to put it into practice.  Christian Aid Ministries has a program to aid hungry refugees in Yemen, and this group gave us the opportunity to give.  Over $600 was raised and sent to feed the hungry in Yemen.  Focusing on others' needs while we have it so good is a good thing to do.
