Super Easy Beginning Basket Weaving

Weaving is a simple but very worthwhile activity.  First of all, it was used by many ancient cultures and is therefore a great history-art project.  Secondly, because it is a hands-on activity, it is good for dexterity.  Finally, it is an enjoyable creative outlet.  I wanted to do something a bit simpler than I had tried last time.  (This had taken us a few hours to complete.)

After doing some research, I found these plastic baskets from Group.  Here is a link to purchase them if you're interested.  We spent some relaxing and therapuetic time weaving with yarn, and when they were done, the students asked to take them home or to use them at their desks.

After the first few had finished making their baskets, we had lots of leftover yarn, so I showed them how to make tassels.  I also told them that they could make as many as the wanted.  By the end of the week, we had seventy-two tassels!  Next week we are going to use them to make a very long garland.

We also finished painting a few rocks to hide at the park, and we did several science experiments.  The neatest one was seeing the different colors of cholorphyll soak up onto coffee filters.
