Classes at the Cloister

For our third field trip for the year, we visited the Ephrata Cloister, and it was fascinating.  Besides taking a full tour of the grounds and learning how the members lived back in the 1700 and 1800s, we got to experience being students in an 1830's school house and tried our hands at writing with a feather pen and ink.

I found this painting extremely intriguing.  It was painted by a man who had visited the cloister and witnessed the brothers plowing using ropes tied to their own bodies rather than burdening animals.
