Fire Up the Kiln! Oops -- Explosion!

For our last art project of the year, we shaped our clay, glazed and painted it, and fired up the kiln!  After seven to eight hours, the red-hot 1,000 degree pottery was done firing and ready to cool off.

The first and third times that we fired our pottery, everything went fine.  But, the second time, there was an

EXPLOSION!

This just happens sometimes when there is a bubble in the pottery, or something just isn't right.  Two pieces exploded, one on the top layer and one on the bottom layer of the kiln.  The pieces on the middle layer were okay, but the shards from the exploded pieces stuck to the glaze of the pieces on the top and bottom layers.  We were able to remove most of the shards with some needle-nosed pliers.
