Fabric Weaving

These fabric weavings were completed by the Abiding Peace Virtual Christian School three dimensional art class students.  Directions are below.

Cut eight strips of fabric about 18" long by 1" wide to make the warp.  (It adds to the interest and variety if these are not cut perfectly, although you could if you wanted them that way :-).  Lay them side-by-side, lining them up at the top.  Tape these to a 24" x 12" piece of cardboard, or sew them onto a piece of fabric about that size across the top.  Tape or sew these pieces at the bottom as well.  Cut eighteen strips of fabric about ten inches long by one inch wide.  Weave these in an over, under, over under pattern across the top.  Start the next piece under and then weave over, under, over; opposite of the piece above it to create a checkerboard pattern.  Pins can be used to hold the last piece woven in place.  Move these down as each piece is woven.

Variations:
*Sew the piece onto fabric around the edges.
*Add lace, ribbon, yarn, etc., and weave it onto the piece.
*Add buttons, beads, trinkets, etc. on the top of the weaving.
(I encouraged my students to have at least three of these.)
