Foil Embossing

Foil embossing was something different I had wanted to try for the three-dimensional art class.  It wasn't that difficult, and was rather enjoyable to do.  First, we sketched our designs onto cardboard.

Next, we outlined the sketch with yarn, using lines of glue to make sure it adhered well.

Once it was completely dry, we gobbed glue all over the top of the design and all the way to the edges of the cardboard (not pictured), and then used a paintbrush to smooth it out over the entire surface of the cardboard.

Next, we wrapped a large sheet of foil all the way around the entire piece of cardboard, overlapping the edges and gluing it to the back.  While the glue was still wet, we pushed the foil down around the edges of the yarn, using an eraser to gently but firmly push the foil down tightly so that the desired lines would show through well.  Once the glue had dried, we painted them.

These are some of our practice ones.  We just cut slits in the sides of the cardboard and wrapped the yarn randomly (or not) around the sides, sliding it into the slits.  The other steps were followed as described above.
