Scherenschnitte -- Otherwise Known as Super Fancy German Paperdolls

While we were enjoying our field trip at the Landis Valley Farm Village and Museum, we stopped by the information center first and watched an informative video.  At one point, the narrarator mentioned scherenschnitte, or the art of German paper cutting.  There were a few seconds of someone doing just that up on the screen.  After the video, I told my students that I was going to research scherenschnitte and learn more about it as I had never heard of it before.

We left the information building and strolled down the street.  The third building we came to was the education building, and guess what activity they were doing in there?  Scherenschitte!  I was delighted.  My students, the chaperones, and I spent a while happily cutting out these lovely designs.   I even made a few of my own designs when I got home.  I'm adding this to my list of hands-on history projects.  Yay for culture, history, and the arts!

The following three photos were taken at Landis Valley Farm Village and Museum and are used with permission.
